Unit Three -- Dark Romanticism and Realism

ELAALRL4 The student employs a variety of writing genres to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of significant ideas in selected literary works. The student composes essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents.

*I think the standard is saying by now you should be able to write in different writing styles.
And to take everything i learn so far and use it.

Short Review:
1. What is original sin? it starts with Adam and Eve.
2.They did not believe that the origianl sin committed by Adam and Eve made the rest of us sinners.

Mini-Lesson:
Nathaniel Hawthorne's -he would probably like it because he was shock about what his great grandfather did.

Herman Melville -Was Ahab pure of mind to sacrifice all the men he was charged with leading? Would a man who witnessed people eating human flesh agree that everyone was good and pure?

*No he was not pure for doing that because he had pose to been watching out fro his crew instead of letting them get ate up.

*I really dont know what another man would think about something like that but i don't think a person would think that every person is good a pure.

Which side of the divide do you fall? Are you closer to being a Transcendentalist or a Dark Romantic? Explain your answer with a short paragraph.

I dont fall on either side because i believe what neither one of them think about the world. Because not every one in the world is good or not every one in the world is bad. But if i had to probably pick a side it might be Transcendentalist because i wouldn't go around thinking every is out to get me or evil.

Work Period:
3. Read either "The Black Cat" or "Hop-Frog", both by Edgar Allen Poe. As you read, keep the Dark Romantics' beliefs in mind because you will be asked to point out these beliefs in the story later. You can also choose to listen to "The Masque of Red Death" below; if you do, be sure to read the text as you listen:

*The Black Cat:describes himself as a caring and loving man, who from the earliest days of his youth was mocked by others for his timidity and concern for all living things. He married a woman who shared this same good natured attitude for all living things, and she brings many animals into the house because they share this in common. These creatures included "birds, gold-fish, a fine dog, rabbits, a small monkey, and a cat.

The man and his cat built a close bond that was nurtured for years, and the fact that not even his wife feeds the cat suggests this. His cat trying to hide from him because he is in such a violent state of mind; as a result, the narrator grabs Pluto abruptly and, when the startled cat bites his hand, he stabs its eye with a penknife, blinding it. The next day after he awoke from his drunken slumber, tired and hung over, the man is horrified to recall what he has done, and this guilt only drives him to drink even further, in an attempt to erase these feelings. Later, he grew infatuated with being violent again towards the cat

As a result, one morning he gleefully wrapped a rope around the poor cat's neck and dangled it from a tree, killing it. That night, however, a stroke of bad luck attacked the narrator as he awoke with his house ablaze, which he narrowly escaped with his wife before the entire property was burnt to the ground.

* he gleefully wrapped a rope around the poor cat's neck and dangled it from a tree, killing it.- Transcendantalists- didn't believe that people had evil in them and the Dark Romantics believe that people had evil in them.

The Raven

*Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore--While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door."'Tis some visiter," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door--Only this and nothing more."

*And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtainThrilled me--filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating"'Tis some visiter entreating entrance at my chamber door--Some late visiter entreating entrance at my chamber door; This it is and nothing more."

It relates to anti-tranacendtalist on many differ ways.Example: But the Raven still beguiling all my sad soul into smiling,Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bust and door; This shows thay the raven is treating the mans pain as a joke showing a sign of evilness. I think its saying that the raven dosen't care about the mans feelings and taking it as a joke. I also realized that the story is about a mans pain for his lost of his wife, Raven is a sign of death and thats why the raven was put in the story.

*6. A symbol is something (usually an object) that stands for a much larger idea. Poe uses symbolism very weill in "The Raven". Can you identify it, and then support what you say with some evidence and analysis?

vainly I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow- i think it is saying that he is thinking about all the good moments what he can't never get back.

7. Check these out. If you are doing what you should, you are addressing all three (and even more) in this unit. Using your word as DIRECT evidence (cut and paste from your own post) tell me how you are meeting these standards.

ELAALRL1 The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events and main ideas) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation.

*i think i used this by taking what they said in the story and using it in my paragraph writing.

ELAALRL2 The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.

*I think i used this one by just taking examples out of the stories i read

ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.

* I think this is saying you will understand better if you know what their time period was like and how they thought.

Your tasks:8. Read "A Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. You should be able to indentify the following in this story:

*a. details that specifically explain a characters actions, or detailed descriptions of a setting.

She said it over and over under her breath: "free, free, free!"

There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself.

b. a social issue that Chopin wants to solve

i think that it is saying dont let anybody get the best of you.

Write a paragraph respone to a and b in which you explain how this story includes these aspects of realism. Each paragraph should have some direct evidence from "A Story of an Hour".

A. I think when she said free free under her breath and when she also was thinking about she can now live for her self. I think this is an example of realism because some people really think like that. A person might get married when they are younger or somthing but when they grow up they might want to be by their self because they will have more freedom.

B. How i think b shows example of realism is by how a person may feel when they are glad they got somthing out there life. When i put what i thought it was saying like dont let nobody get the best of you i got it from the story when she was kinda glad her husband was gone but when he came back she later die.

9. Read "The Battle with Mr Covey" by Frederick Douglass. Follow the same directions for #1. Go further on this one to explain what you think Douglass' purpose was for writing this. Your response should be three paragraphs.

*I think the purpose of Frederick Douglass writing this story was to show realism. What i got from realism so far is that its shows or tells you what is going on so you can do somthing about it. For example slavery is not here today because of people disapproval of what was going on. Another reason i think Douglass wrote this story was to teach you what slaves went threw so it will never happen again.

*A couple of examples of realism in the story where when the slaves was getting beat for resting or not finishing their job. A example of that was when he had no more energy and fell to the ground and his slave master at that time or who he was working for hit him across the head. Or another time when he had hid and his master found him and kick him and told him to get up.

*The whole story to me is kind on base realism because things that was said and done are events that really happen back then around slavery time. Example of that is like when his master told the slave to go back and do what the Mr. covey was saying or he was gonna get a hold of him and that means whoop him. Another realism part was when an slave named Sandy went to go see his wife when he didnt have to work. Events like that really happen

10. Provide a modern example of realism (Boyz in tha Hood, and Menace II Society, for that matter are off-limits). This can be music, a movie, a television show, a book, or whatever you may choose. You need to explain how it is realism, and provide an example from your choice (a lyric, description of a scene, quote, etc.)

* The movie Shottas because it tells a story about two kids growing up together in Kingston, Jamaica. They take on the gangsta life style known over there as shotta which really means gangsta. They way it is realism because it tells how kids grow up over there and what they go threw.

11. The fun part - - -a. Decide what you like best, Dark Romanticism or Realism.b. Create a short piece ( a poem or very short story) of whichever you choose.c. Explain (with at least a paragraph or two with direct evidence from your own example) how it is a good representation of Dark Romanticism or Realism. Keep in mind that you are proving how your story fits whichever idea you choose, so discussing the idea itself is necessary.

A.* I like realism better because it tells how things really is or tries its best to.

B.* Growing up in Athens...

Once upon a time there was a boy named Chuck he grew up in athens georgia. His family was poor so he stayed in section 1 most of his life. Growing up Chuck was around drugs, money and alchol so being intruduced to that at an young age he drop out of school in the 8 grade and started selling drugs to have money in his pocket because he didnt like being broke. That was going straight for about two years. What had pose to been his 10 grade year in school and his 16 b-day was just a week away Chuck was nowhere to be found. He was found a month later in the woods sombody had rob and kill him for the drugs he was selling.

c. Explain (with at least a paragraph or two with direct evidence from your own example) how it is a good representation of Dark Romanticism or Realism. Keep in mind that you are proving how your story fits whichever idea you choose, so discussing the idea itself is necessary.

*I think my story is a good representation of realism. the reason i think that is because most of boys or men growing up in section 1 house's tend to think thats all they we every see in life or might not ever be nobody because of where they come from so basically i just wrote a story about sombody growing up in section 1 and how they may look at life.

12. Explain (with DIRECT EVIDENCE FROM YOUR OWN WORK) how you have met (or exceeded) at least two of the standards listed below.

ELAALRL2 The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.

* i think i used this by just taking things that stood out in a story or poem and just giving examples of what it is saying.

ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.

* i think i used this one by really just understanding what pople thought in their time periods and really take their understanding and look at it in a different way.

Unit Four -- Modernism

ELAALRL5 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing.

*1. Create a new post on your blog called "Unit Four", and then explain which of the above standards you have had the most difficulty mastering. Make specific references to the work you have done in this class in your response.

*It wouldn't say it was the most difficulty for me to master but it was one i had problems with. and the reason why is because in other time periods they had a different vocabulary so when you are doing a lit project on their time period you have to make sure you use the words correctly because our words might mean somthing different in their time.

Please post the following to your blog:
2. Choose one of the Modernism themes named above that you are most interested in studying: Disillusionment, the Harlem Renaissnace, The Jazz Age, or Phychoanalysis. Write a paragraph that describes why you made this choice and how you expect to see the topic you chose represented in the literature you are about to read.

I choosed to read about The Harlem Renaissance. The reason i read about it was because i think it was a great movement in the black community. It kind of give you things about how african americans felt in that time period and what they thought. And the reason i expect to see more about this in a story about it because i had a great effect on people. It might even changed how blacks and whites look at life.

3. Read the story that coresponds to the theme you chose. Chose a topic according to your interests, not the length of the story. Choosing a story because of its length is not the wisest way to approach this assignment.

When you are through reading, you should type a two-paragraph response to the story you read,

*The Harlem Renaissance:The Development of a New African-American Consciousness

The story i read was about the Harlem Renaissance. A couple of things i toke from the story was about African Americans who move up to the north from the south after the war. At a time period white americans rule the music world and the shows. They had a few black people in their shows. And a couple of the shows where basically like talking about how Africans amercians live or how they thought they did.

Not to many blacks liked the show or plays even when they had real African americans in them. the reason i think they didnt like it was because it was either making blacks look like fools or telling a story about how they really live. Finally during the Harlem movement Africans Americans started to take stuff in their hands and really give to other people of how live for them really was. Some shows showed good things about their life and some music relates to the bad things they went threw.

provide another two paragraphs in which you analyze the theme you chose and how it is represented in the story. Take time to explain how the author features the theme you chose, and go deeper and explain what you believe he or she is saying about America. This will require you to provide examples straight from the texts as well as some synthesis on your part (drawing your own conclusions).

* If i had to analyze what Harlem Renaissance was i would say it was one of the greatest movements in the world. The reason i think this is because it brought people closer together and it made you think about other people lifes if you didn't. It give the world a couple of things to look at from african americans like art, music, and plays. So there for every body have a different way to look at life. it was represented in the story because it was talking about how the harlem renaissance started and who help started it.

* I think Angela Wiley features what i choosed is because she wrote about the Harlem Renaissance and how it started and people that help make it a movement. A couple of examples of that are->In 1917, an intellectual movement, known as the Harlem Renaissance, began in Harlem and lasted until 1935. Or The Harlem Renaissance was a somewhat forced phenomenon, a cultural nationalism of the parlor, institutionally encouraged and directed by leaders of the national civil rights establishment for the paramount purpose of improving race relations in a time of extreme national backlash, caused in a large part by ecomonic gains won by Afro-Americans during the Great War. I believe she is saying that the Harlem Renaissance effect america from the art, music, and plays because many people back then probably didnt know that African americans could make such an impact on people threw things they created.

4. Read the following poems. When you study poetry, it is a good habit to read each selection MORE THAN ONCE.

Richard Corey- i think this has to do with modernism. The reason i think that is because everybody use to look at him walking down the street and really wanted to be him or thougth he had a really good life because of the money and class he had. An example of that is->
And he was rich—yes, richer than a king,And admirably schooled in every grace. But when he killed his self they might have realize his life wasn't that great.

Mending Wall- I think it uses modernism by just looking at another person point of view or theirselves. And really thinking about what the person means when he say “Good fences make good neighbours.” I think it is saying just keep a little distance between people and you will have a good relationship.

A Dream Deferred- This poem has modernism in it because it has no logical basis i think. And what i mean by that is its not talking about nothing but what happens to dreams that deffered. An example of that is->What happens to a dream deferred?Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? And a part of modernism is disallusionment and thats basically saying get away from stuff that isn't real.

The Negro Speaks of Rivers - This poem to me is saying that over a period of time that this person grew more into his spirt side I say that because in the poem he puts My soul has grown deep like the rivers. So basically to me its saying that your spirt side is an important and deep side to all of us.

Incident- From what i got from the poem it was talking about a boy who was 8 and went to Baltimore with high hopes or nothing bad on his mind. But when he got there he was kind of shocked at what happen. Example->Now I was eight and very small, His tongue, and called me, "Nigger. And the only thing tht he can remember in Baltimore was getting called a nigger.

5. Review your response to number 1 in this unit. Then explain how you have addressed the Georgia Performance Standard you said was a challenge for you. You should support this claim with evidence from your own work.

Thursday, December 17, 2009

What about the story did you find particularly Romantic? You may want to reread the section on Romanticism again to refresh your memory. Give at least two examples with direct evidence for each.

*How Rip fell a sleep as ordinary person and woke up as the talk around talk.

Rip’s story was soon told, for the whole twenty long years had been to
him but as one night. The neighbors stared when they heard it;

He used to tell his story to every stranger that arrived at Mr. Doolittle’s
hotel.

How does this poem illustrate all three of the main themes of Romanticism? Make sure you provide evidence for each claim you make.

The poem illustrate Romanticism by saying when you die you should look at it in a positive way. Another way it illustrates it by saying when you die you are gonna have peace and you connect with mother nature. The last reason I got from the poem was saying you should feel good beacuse you will have friends if you didnt on earth and will be laying with kings and wise men.

* I think i use this by using stuff they said from the poem and putting it in my answer.

ELAALRL2 The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.

*I think i use this by just putting the words together and understanding what the words said in the story or poem.

ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.

I think this is talking about if you read or knew how these people thought from other time periods that you could get their historical background if so i did this to.

7.)This video was a good example of Transcendalism. The man was with nature and he believed that it was only him, god, and the animals. Example: The man works hard in building his home and relying on himself to do so. The Transcendalist believed that working hard was a way of god speaking to them and they also thought that a humans indivisual mind was very powerful and you should only work with self. They belived that god was with them while working hard and by being with self. The man in the video was alone for 35 years working in the wilderness. A perfect Example is from Ralph Waldo Emerson text is, “to go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society.” To me this is an good example because this means that man should go out and be with god, and worry about yourself and not to work so hard.

Entrepreneurship / Jittery Joe's

Is working at Jittery Joe's your first experience with work? If not, what skills from other jobs are you implementing at the coffee shop? If it is, what skills are you learning that you will take with you to future jobs?

*No i had a job this summer working with the city. My summer job was really cleaning up stuff so the skills i learned is cleaning. How to fix things for people and clean.

Weekly Question Two
We are already beginning to talk about customer service. Talk about a positive customer service experience you have had working at Jittery Joe's.

* A positive customer service experience was when i was selling food to my friends. The reason I think that is because it feels good selling food or drinks to the group of peers. Another positive experience was also seeling food to my teachers or just people thats just visting classic city.

Weekly Question Three
Talk about tasks that can be done when the coffee shop is slow. What types of things can you be working on to still be a productive worker?

* I think a good task to do when the coffee shop is moving slow is cleaning up. The reason i say that is because don't no one wants to buy food or even make an order when the area their buying from is nasty. The reason i say this is because i know i wouldn't want to buy anything from a place that has old food laying around just nasty period.

Weekly Question Four
Do you have classmates asking you for free drinks or pastries? You aren't alone! Some of your peers will ask you this frequently, causing you to make an ethical decision. How have you handled it in the past? How will you handle it in the future?

* Yes i have got ask to give some of my peers free snacks or drinks. How i handle it in the past was by saying there is a camera right there and it works. How i will handle it in the future will probably be by saying the same thing or just telling them i cant lose a creadit for no one because im trying to get out of school not go to jail.

Weekly Question Five
Has there been a time where you made an error either with money or dealing with a customer? Explain what happened and how you corrected it. What will you do differently next time?

Yes there was one time when we had alot of customers and instead of putting 50 cents in to the cash register i put in five dollars so that made the count under. A way i will not make that mistake again will be just by moving a little bit slower when i'm making a purchase. But i won't move to slow so i can still help out with the customers.

Weekly Question Six
Describe how you feel physically while working. What changes or stays the same as you work?

I feel good because you really dont have to stand unless you selling food to a customer or just cleaning up. One thing that i will say that stays the same as I work is just being ready to help a customer or cleaning when somthing spills or just need cleaning up.

Weekly Question Seven
Have you had a bad customer experience? Without using names or identifying information, explain what happened and how you resolved the situation.

I really can't say i had a bad customer experience besides not knowing how to make coffee drinks for people. How i resolved that problem was just basically just learning how to make the drinks.

Weekly Question Eight
Now that you have legitimate work experience (if you did not already) do you feel differently about the way you spend money? Assume you earned minimum wage for working at Jittery Joe's instead of course credit. How does that change the value of money in your eyes?

No i really don't feel differently by spending money. I guess it stills feel the same because i already held a job. I really couldn't say it would change the value of money in my eyes because I all have been getting paid to work.

Weekly Question Nine
What has been the most difficult part of your job at Jittery Joe's? What would you change if you could?

The only diffcult part i had at jittery joe's was just making drinks and learning how to make them. Because different drinks take different things you got to put into it. I wouldn't change nothing because its a good thing you learn how to make them so if you could get another job doing the same thing and already know how to do it.

Weekly Question Ten
What is your greatest achievement in school so far this semester?

My greatest achievement i would probably say is not failing no classes and just keeping good grades threw out the school year.

Weekly Question Eleven
What job do you ideally want? What skills will you need to hone in order to get that job? What educational background is required? How does this class help you to train for these things?

My ideal job is just owning my own business. The skills i need for that job is just business classes. The educational background required is college course on business. This class helps me with that i guess by just letting me count money and sell things.

Weekly Question Twelve
As the semester ends, think back over the last few months. What experience has been most valuable to you?

I really can't say i had a valuable experience because it just felt like another day at school for me. And the cleaning part of jittery joe's was crazy to because people do not clean up nothing and leave it for me or my partner to do.

ELAALRL3

ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.

*I think it is saying read all the stories and try to understand other time periods and what they did back then.

The Bloody Knife(Micmac)retold byS. E. Schlosser
Many and many a year ago, two Micmac warriors from rival villages got into a terrible argument. Harsh words were exchanged, and then knives were pulled. The warriors battled back and forth on the banks of a small creek. They fought with the ferocity of grizzlies, tearing at each other with their knives, ripping at each others clothes and hair.
Suddenly, one of the warriors slipped on the muddy bank and fell into the waters of the creek. His bloody knife slipped from his hand and sank down and down to the bottom, landing upon a rock just beyond his reach. The warrior strained his pain-wracked body towards the knife as his blood filled the waters of the creek, but it was just beyond his fingertips. He thrashed and clawed towards his knife, desperate to reach it before his rival killed him, but no matter how he stretched, it always slipped out of reach.
On the bank above, the victorious Micmac warrior saw his rival sink into the blood-stained waters and lay still, the knife just a hair-breadth beyond his fingertips. He did not rise again. The fallen man's people found him a few hours later and tenderly rescued his body from the rippling waters of the creek. But when they tried to retrieve his bloody knife from the rock beneath him, it always slipped beyond their reach, though the creek was not deep.
Many and many a year has passed since that bloody day by the creek, and still the blood-stained knife lies beneath the rippling waters of the creek. Whenever anyone tries to reach it, the knife slips out of reach. It is like trying to touch something on the bottom of the sea, although the creek itself is not deep. Even the rushing waters of the spring season do not move the mysterious knife or wash away the blood staining its blade.
For this reason, the creek is called Wokun - meaning "knife" by the Micmac people, and the white men call it "Bloody Creek

* I think my example is basically saying that you shouldn't fight just stay peaceful. The story is about warriors from different villages who got in to an argument. They started fighting by a bank and they was fighting with knifes, Then one warrior fell into the creek and when he tried to get his knife it kept slipping out of his reach. Everytime some one tried to get the knife out it kept slipping like it was saying theres no need for a knife just stay peaceful.

* The Natives i guess believed that they should stay peaceful and believed in different gods. So when the warrior tried to reach for his knife it kept slipping away.Whenever anyone tries to reach it, the knife slips out of reach. It is like trying to touch something on the bottom of the sea, although the creek itself is not deep.

* Puritans believed in one god and also thought everybody was born a sinner and there is no way to get all of god grace.

*some of the ways the are different are that one of them believed in one god and the other one don't. They have different gods and believed in different stuff also.

Yes i believed if they were able to meet they would clash. i think that because the Natives and Puritans did things in a different way. And one of the groups might try to take over and make the other group learn about their god and teach them to do stuff how they do it.

*ELAALRL5 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing.

cultures-
The totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought.

clash-To come into conflict; be in opposition:

sermon -
A religious discourse delivered as part of a church service.

*Work Period

philosophy- a theory

scripture-writings of religions

Age of Rationalism-Early 17th century philosophy

Rationalist-exercise of reason

unalienable -Not to be separated

* The Rationalist believed in god as well but they thought you could solve things by science or find out how somthing came about.

* The Puritans didn't believe that because they thought god had control over everything really and thought if you did anything to look like you making fun of the god or doing evil stuff they could put you on trail and kill you if found guilty.

* Franklin is a good example of a Rationalist because instead of waiting on god or thinking god will change him. He starts to try to change his self and say that it's up to him to change his self. Example: My intention being to acquire the habitude of all these virtues, i judge it would be well not to distract my attention by attempting the whole at once, but to fix it on one of them at a time, and when i should master of that, then to proceed to another, and so on till i should have gone through the thirteen.

My Thirteen Virtues

1. Work- Do what i got to do to at work or at school.
2. Study- Come home and study my work or look at what i gotta do better.
3. Dress- Dress neat if im going some where or not.
4. Clean- Clean up my room or if i see something around the house help out.
5. Sleep- Try to get enough of sleep.
6.Peace- Try not to start with anybody and try to stay calm.
7. Bath- Take a shower every day.
8. Money- Get money everyday by any means.
9. Drugs- Stay drug free.
10. Job- Get a job before i get out of school.
11. Family- Put family before everybody and help them out.
12. God- Make God number one in my life
13. Chruch- Go to chruch every sunday or when i can.

Do you think you could reach moral perfection in this way?

* It kind of go both ways. The reason i say that is because you need God to help you change. So you might pray to god to help you be a better person. You might also try to change yourself by writing stuff down like Franklin did and try to do one of them at a time. So that why i think its kind of a go by ways.

*I think it is saying to use words that fit and try to give good details and explain what you doing well.
